Well, time sure flies. Not too late though so let's get making goodies!
This Slow Cooker Sweetened Condensed Milk recipe makes exactly the measurement of the 14 ounce can that recipes call for. Feel free to double it or triple it all at once for multiple recipes.
Any goodie you can think of, in fact, because you have super easy recipes to get you over the dairy hump. Don't forget that it freezes really well too.
Ingredients
- Dairy-free milk is what this recipe is all about. Well, that and treats.
- Coconut sugar adds a different type of sweet flavor in a very understated way.
- Dairy-free butter adds depth to the flavor.
- Vanilla extract adds so much flavor to the final product.
Instructions
- This recipe will give you a 14 ounce 'can' of vegan sweetened condensed milk when it is all done.
- Do watch it though because you may think your old crockpot cooks just fine but they really do lose wattage over the years. You'll think you're cooking on high but you're not.
- Add the non-dairy milk, butter, and coconut sugar to the crockpot.
- Stir well.
- Do NOT cover because it has to cook down to become condensed.
- Stir about every 30 minutes, just for checking.
- Cook on high for 1 Β½ hours.
- Add vanilla and stir.
- Pour in a measuring cup to make sure you have the right measurement.
- I say to do this because some slow cookers might cook a little bit hotter.
- If it has condensed too much you can add a little bit more almond milk to get the measurement correct.
Double or triple this recipe and you can take advantage of more than one of your baking recipes that have sweetened condensed milk as one of the ingredients.
It will keep about 2 weeks in your refrigerator and freezes very well.
More homemade essentials
- Evaporated Milk is another important ingredient in many recipes. This one also comes from a slow cooker.
- You can never have too much Dairy-Free Ranch Dressing and this recipe is spot on!
- Homemade Chocolate Syrup comes in handy once in a while and this tastes just like the syrup you love.

Hi:
Thanks for this great recipe. Just wondering, which canned coconut milk do you like/use? Need to order some - I've used Native Forest, Thai kitchen, 365 whole foods - but looking for something creamier and tastier. If it's out there.
Thanks for your help

Unless I'm reading the instructions wrong for the recipe, I don't see when you add the vegan butter and vanilla. Put it all in the crock pot at once? Or add after it's already thickened? I've got my milk and sugar sitting in the crock pot already and running out of time this morning to do this, but guess I'd better just try adding at all once for now. Hoping you will clarify. Thanks!
Ginny McMeans
I just saw this. West coast. So sorry - I fixed the instructions. It is okay if you went ahead and added the vanilla at the beginning but I stir it in at the end. Some of the flavor cooks out of the vanilla (alcohol) that is why it is always added last.
Kathryn
I love the idea of using the crock pot to reduce the recipe for non-dairy sweetened condensed milk. Does this method allow for the mixture to thicken? Also, when doubling the recipe is the timing lengthened? Thank you for your help!
Tara Durant
Would other vegan milk substitutes work as well? We have a nut allergy and I'd like to try coconut milk. Thanks!
Ginny McMeans
Yes Tara, absolutely. In fact, I changed the recipe to reflect that. Thanks!
Tess
I must be missing something - I can't find the recipe. I click on the recipe link and it just pulls up a blank page to print. I MUST have this recipe!
Ginny McMeans
I don't know what happened but got it fixed. Thanks for the heads up!
Tes
Yay, thank you Ginny!! I am freaking out about the possibility of vegan caramel! π
Lisa
I can't see the recipe.
Ginny McMeans
I don't know what happened Lisa. Thanks and it is fixed.:)
Kristina
Hello Ginny, I've been looking for a vegan recipe for sweetened condensed milk, since this recipe is non-dairy, would I be able to make it with Almond or Rice milk instead? I make a Peruvian cookies called Alfajores and the filling is a very thickened caramel that I make from the regular sweet condensed milk by boiling the cans for 3 hours. I would like to be able to make them gluten free/vegan friendly for some of my friends. I never thought of using a crock pot, and you mentioned that it could get real thick...which is great, that is what I need. Once in the crock pot would I need to stir it or just let it cook for perhaps 2 hours and check the thickness? I would appreciate any feedback.
Ginny McMeans
Hi Kristina! Yes, you can use almond or rice milk. I am not sure how rice milk would taste but almond would be good. I would check every 1/2 hour until it is the thickness you want. It sounds like you need a larger quantity so I might double the ingredients so that is does not cook away over the longer period of time. What is the finished measurement that you need for the recipe? Do you need it twice as thick as a can of condensed milk?
Jennifer Green
Can I make this with coconut oil instead of a butter substitute? I need it to be soy free as well as dairy free.
Ginny McMeans
Yes, you can Jennifer. Change the measurement to 1 1/2 tablespoon though. The dairy free butters cook down a bit and coconut oil won't.
Sammie
I know this is super old, but does it have to be coconut sugar? I don't have a whole lot to spare and that kinda stuff is more expensive than regular sugar..
Will probably look it up as well, but thought it'd be best to ask the recipe creator.
Ginny McMeans
Hi Sammie, not old at all π No, it doesn't have to be coconut sugar. Granulated sugar will work. My problem is I don't know if the measurement should be cut back at all. White sugar is so much sweeter. How about - measure 1/2 cup and then scoop 1 tablespoon out of the measurement. Try that. Let me know how it goes. Thanks!
Sandra
Can you make this stove top?? I do not have a slow cooker.
Ginny McMeans
I'm sure you can Sandra. You'd have to stand over it though (watch it closely) because it will cook away much more quickly than in a closed crockpt and would burn more easily.
Jen
Hi,
Just wondering if you used a different type of coconut sugar? I just put the ingredients in the crock pot & the colour is almost caramel brown because of the coconut sugar, whereas yours looks white.
Ginny McMeans
Wow, I never thought of that. Yes, there are many brands now. I suppose some must turn the color more than others. Darn! I need to make it again with a store brand and see what happens. Do you remember the one you used? It shouldn't matter unless you want your dessert to be a light color. It will work with organic granulated sugar too. I'll do that one again and compare.
Renee Robinson
Did you make it again with granulated sugar?
Ginny McMeans
Yes, I did Renee and it worked great. Tastes delicious!
Siena
Now I can make every recipe that I want! I made an old fudge recipe that has been handed down in my family and thanks to this recipe it came out phenomenal. Thanks so much!
Kathleen
I'm allergic to coconut. Can I use truvia or stevia?
Ginny McMeans
Well, you can Kathleen. Organic white sugar will be vegan and the same measurement. Stevia will only be about 1/2 teaspoon. For truvia I believe you would need a little bit more than 1/3 cup. Keep in mind that stevia and truvia will taste very different from true sweetened condensed milk.
Holly O'Connell
Do i need to melt the butter first?
