Add a little spice to your life with a Michelada. The perfect balance of tomato, lime, hot sauce, and an ice-cold beer. A tradition that you shouldn’t miss.
Michelada is a comforting cocktail. You know how Bloody Mary’s are served at a brunch or on a party day a bit earlier than usual?
Well, the Mexican Bloody Mary lets you take it even a little easier because the vodka is switched out with your favorite beer. Yes, that means you aren’t going to get knocked out of your socks in the a.m.
Lime is also added for the Mexican flare and, of course, some hot sauce. There is even a little chili seasoning mixed with the salt for the rim.
Sounding good? Oh, it is!
You might think it is too hot but it isn’t. There is just more spicy flavor in this Michelada recipe which mixes great with tomato and beer.
I use to carry around a prejudice against yuppies (the 90’s?). I know, it sounds terrible.
Does that term even exist anymore? Don’t ask me because I don’t even know what a yuppie is!
Anyway, this is how my brain worked. I thought that yuppies (whoever they are) invented putting limes in Corona beer.
So, you couldn’t put limes on your prettiest platter and get me to squeeze lime juice in my Corona. I am laughing at myself.
Sometime, in past years, I learned from my nephew (he surfs in Mexico on a yearly trip) that it is a Mexican way of life to put lime in ALL of their beers.
I went, ‘Oh!!! I was so wrong. Now I’m always going to put a lime in my beer.” I know. I am easily swayed and thank goodness my prejudices are frivolous.
So, check out this Michelada recipe to enhance your South of the Border experience and have fun.
Another Mexican inspired cocktail
Oh, I almost forgot! Another fun cocktail to serve at special occasions is the Silver Cadillac Margarita. So very very refreshing.
Let me slip in this one pic of the margarita. It’s so good and pretty too! There’s a golden recipe on that post too.

You can see why I wanted you to take a look. It’s so hard to describe food or drink without pictures.
How to set up a Michelada recipe bar
- This will add more color and festivities to the area indoors or out.
- Sidebar or table and it would be especially handy if you could work at it standing up.
- Glassware of your choice. You could also use taller beer glasses too.
- A short but wider glass container for green olives.
- Another matching holder or tray to hold lime wedges.
- Picks to hold the olives. A saucer with lots of the salt and chili seasoning for dipping.
- Lots of ice and tongs for placing ice in the glasses.
- Tomato mixture in a pitcher or large measuring cup for pouring.
- Beer!
Ingredients

For the Salty Rim
- Sea salt or coarse salt
- Chili seasoning mix
For the Drink:
- Tomato juice or Bloody Mary Mix
- Lime juice
- Vegan Worcestershire sauce
- Hot sauce
- Beer
- Green olives
- Lime wedge
Instructions
For the Rim:
- Mix the salt and chili seasoning in a saucer and spread wider than the rim of the glass.
- Use a lime wedge and rub around the rim of each glass.
- Hold the glass from the bottom and move straight down and place it into the salt/chili seasoning mix. Lift and set aside.
For the Drink:
- Pour all of the drink ingredients into a large pitcher and mix.
- Fill up the glass with ice.
- Pour the mixed drink over the ice.
- Serve with olives and lime wedges for a little extra fun.

P.S. For the bar – a shortcut would be to have the olives already on the picks as they are in the photo right below.
It’ll make things a little easier.
Another hint is if you pre-cut a tiny slice into the center of the lime wedge it will slip onto the class rim much easier.

I can’t wait to try this! I’ve always wanted to like bloody mary’s, but they’re just to heavy. Swapping the vodka for the beer sounds much lighter and refreshing. Cheers!

I was introduced to this drink last Winter in Palm Springs by a friend of mine who happens to be Mexican. He uses a spice called Tijan in the drink and it is fantastic! My new favourite drink.
-
Oh, I use to live in Palm Desert and I know Tijan well. It is great with this drink and you are lucky to have had it made for you by an expert. 🙂

In Mexico, we add salt to the ice, THEN 2 limes, THEN salsa maggie or wershester sauce, a dash of Tabasco or valentina, finally the beer. The order DOES make a difference. TRy it, it will make a big difference ?

Thanks for the extra info Carolys. This is good to know for authenticity 🙂

I am loving this idea for lazy Sunday brunches. Using beer instead of a harder spirit is such a clever idea, go Mexico!!

Hahaha! Go Mexico!

My brother calls this a poor mans bloody mary. Whatever it is called, I call it a great brunch cocktail-
hahaha! I love that and I’m very poor 😀

-
Yummy! This looks delicious and I love that this is under 100 calories! -
Worcestershire sauce contains anchovies I believe. Just in case anyone is looking for the drink to be truly vegan. ? Try a bit of soy sauce or liquid amines instead.-
Thanks Rebecca but there are vegan Worcestershire sauces now. It’s getting better and better all the time.

Very close to what we had in Mexico City. Good, will make this again. -
Actually made this. Fantastic recipe. A great blood Mary alternative. I used Mr. And Mrs. Ts original bloody mix and it’s just like an authentic Mexican chelada.
