We tasted as many vegan yogurts as we could find and are reviewing our top 9 favorites, including yogurts made from soy milk, almond milk, cashew milk, and more.

Table of Contents
What is Vegan Yogurt?
Vegan yogurt typically consists of a plant based milk--such as oat or coconut--which has been flavored and thickened in order to give it a consistency similar to that of dairy yogurt.
The key ingredient in vegan yogurt, and all yogurt for that matter, is live and active cultures. These cultures are microscopic little bacteria which give yogurt its characteristically tangy flavor and are thought to provide a wealth of digestive and systemic benefits when consumed regularly.
Types of Vegan Yogurt
There are tons of delicious vegan yogurts to choose from, with different ingredient profiles so as to suit any specific taste or dietary needs. The most common base ingredients are: coconut, soy, oat, almond, and cashew. Non-dairy yogurts may come in a range of flavors from plain or fruit flavors to chocolate or vanilla flavors!

The Taste Test
During the taste test phase, our panel of tasters sampled each vegan yogurt brand without any alteration--this means no toppings, mix-in’s or sweeteners! Even though most folks consume yogurt with additions, our aim here was to stay as objective as possible in our flavor evaluations.
The Criteria
In order to be deemed the winner in one of the above categories, each vegan yogurt received a mark in each of 5 criteria categories. A 5-point scale was used, from which we calculated an overall average as well.
- Taste & Texture: evaluating each yogurt in terms of flavor and consistency, as well how similar or different it is to traditional dairy based yogurts.
- Nutrition Content: considering calorie, fat, carbohydrate, and protein content as well as the presence of added sugars and any vitamins or minerals that are provided. This criteria also takes into account general ingredient quality.
- Unique Characteristics: such as special flavors, unique ingredients, or any other specifics that might set one vegan yogurt apart from the rest.
- Value: the price per ounce.
- Production & Packaging: factors of distribution and availability as well as how each yogurt is produced and any characteristics of the parent company itself.
Best Almond Milk Vegan Yogurt:
Silk Almond Milk Yogurt Alternative
Flavor: Mixed Berry Acai
Number of Probiotic Strains: 5
Here is how Silk Almond Milk Yogurt Alternative scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.5 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.4 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0
- Value: 5.0 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.7 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
Our tasting panel agreed that this was one of the most delicious vegan yogurts we tested. This almond milk based yogurt from Silk is a lovely and aromatic blend of raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and acai puree all mixed up in a subtly nutty base.
One serving of this stuff provides a full 3 grams of dietary fiber--the highest we found--as well as 10% your DV of both calcium and vitamin D, plus smaller amounts of iron and potassium.
This yogurt is one of the most affordable products we encountered, costing us a mere $0.32 per ounce but you can rest assured this low cost doesn’t indicate low quality by any means. Silk is actually a certified B Corp, meaning they put extra effort into having positive socio economic and environmental impacts.
Their Almond Milk Yogurt Alternative is also free from soy, carrageenan, and artificial flavors. We found it to be completely tasty to eat straight out of the cup.
Along with such craveworthy flavor comes an unfortunate amount of sugar. Each single-serve cup of this yogurt carries 14 grams of sugar--13 of which are in the form of added cane sugar. We also have to say the texture of this yogurt is not the most “yogurt-like”, as though it is plenty silky, it is quite runny and not at all thick.
Pros:
- Features one of the most delicious flavors we tasted, with 4 different mixed berries.
- Has the highest amount of fiber.
- Provides calcium, vitamin D, iron, and potassium.
- One of the most affordable at just $1.69 per container.
- Silk is a certified B Corp.
- Free from soy, carrageenan, and artificial colors.
Cons:
- Very high in sugar.
- Texture is not very yogurt-y, instead is on the runny and thin side.
Best Cashew Milk Vegan Yogurt:
Forager Project Organic Probiotic Cashewmilk Yogurt
Flavor: Vanilla Bean
Number of Probiotic Strains: 5
Here is how Forager Project Organic Probiotic Cashewmilk Yogurt scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.5 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.5 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
- Value: 4.8 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
Cashew milk is a relative newcomer to the plant based dairy scene and boy are we glad it joined the party! Forager Project is whipping up all kinds of good products using these tasty tree nuts, and their Organic Probiotic Cashewmilk Yogurt is one such iteration.
This yogurt features a blend of coconut cream and cashew milk, thankfully neither of which overpower the flavor profile. This flavor is all vanilla bean all the way! It very obviously is made from the real deal too, with plenty of vanilla bean flecks dispersed throughout the yogurt--no artificially flavored extract here.
The nicely balanced sweet yet tangy and wonderfully floral flavor and aroma of this yogurt is great for enjoying on its own or using it as a topping for desserts such as our Easy Vegan Crepes.
Forager Project’s yogurts are USDA certified organic and non-GMO project verified and we love their eco-friendly packaging as well. Each carton is thoughtfully wrapped in a cardboard label--as opposed to plastic film--which is easily peel off and recycled separately from the cup itself. We love when companies make it nice and easy for us as a consumer to do the right thing!
The texture of this yogurt fell to the bottom of the charts unfortunately. Even though it contains locust bean gum, an excellent thickening agent, it is supremely runny, more like a melted smoothie as opposed to a thickened yogurt product. For this reason, as well as the fact that something is just “off” about the mouthfeel, this one doesn’t exactly hit the spot for yogurt--but is tasty nonetheless!
Also, this vegan yogurt had one of the saddest micronutrient profiles of all we tested, with a measly 2% DV of calcium and that’s it.
Pros:
- Nice blend of coconut cream and cashew milk.
- Great vanilla flavor with plentiful real vanilla bean speckled throughout.
- Strikes a nice yogurt-like balance of sweet yet tangy.
- USDA organic and non-GMO.
- Comes in easy-to-separate and recycle plastic cup with cardboard label.
Cons:
- Texture is very thin and runny.
- Doesn’t really satisfy the craving for yogurt.
- Does not provide much in the way of vitamins/minerals.
Best Coconut Milk Vegan Yogurt:
So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Milk Yogurt Alternative
Flavor: Key Lime
Number of Probiotic Strains: 8
Here is how So Delicious Dairy Free Coconut Milk Yogurt Alternative scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.3 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.6 / 5.0
- Value: 4.7 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.6 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0
Among vegan yogurt options, coconut milk yogurts are some of the most popular and are especially appreciated for their thick and creamy texture. This coconut yogurt from So Delicious has a pleasantly rich mouthfeel and velvety texture due to the inclusion of both coconut milk and coconut cream. These ingredients are made from coconuts which are certified organic by Quality Assurance International, an independent organic certification outfit.
Despite all of the richness, this yogurt actually has one of the lowest fat contents of all yogurts we tested with just 4 grams per serving. It boasts an otherwise impressive nutritional profile as well, with 50% your DV of vitamin B12, 15% DV of calcium, and 10% DV vitamin D.
And with 8 unique probiotic strains, this yogurt option is one of the best for your microbiome. Last but not least, let’s not forget the key lime flavor! The taste of this vegan yogurt was a favorite across our tasting panel for the way it hits the same note as a refreshing slice of key lime pie.
The tasty flavor doesn’t come without a price however. Unfortunately this yogurt features the highest number of added sugars with 16 grams of cane sugar per serving.
Also, this yogurt has shameful protein content--less than one gram per serving! Many folks count on their yogurt as a daily source of protein so when one is sadly lacking in this important nutrient, it leaves a big box unchecked.
Pros:
- Rich, velvety mouthfeel makes for a very satisfying texture.
- Ingredients are made from certified organic coconuts.
- Features one of the lowest total fat contents.
- Excellent micronutrient content with half your day’s supply of vitamin B12!
- Has 8 different probiotic strains, among the highest we found.
- Key lime flavor is truly, so delicious.
Cons:
- Has the highest sugar content of all yogurts we evaluated.
- Less than 1 gram of protein per serving--not ideal if you’re looking to yogurt to help meet your daily protein goals.
Best Soy Milk Vegan Yogurt:
Silk Dairy-Free Soy Yogurt Alternative
Flavor: Peach Mango
Number of Probiotic Strains: 4
Here is how Silk Dairy-Free Soy Yogurt Alternative scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 5.0 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0
- Value: 5.0 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.7 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.8 / 5.0
In terms of dairy options that are suitable for a plant based diet, soy milk is one alternative that is often at the top of the list for most folks. Not surprisingly, soy milk yogurt is supremely popular as well, and this option from Silk was hands down our favorite soy based choice.
We were taken by its silky yet thick texture--which does the brand name some serious justice and also, is notably richer than the almond milk yogurt of theirs which we featured as well.
This yogurt also might just take the cake as far as nutrition goes. Not only is it the only vegan yogurt we found to be completely saturated fat free, but it is also very low in calories with just 120 calories per serving, and high in protein with 6 grams per serving. It also provides 15% DV of calcium, 10% DV vitamin D, and 8% DV potassium.
We fell hard for the sweetly tropical flavor of this yogurt, with nice pieces of peach and mango fruits speckled throughout the body of the yogurt and an overall refreshing looking subtle orange coloring. And, not only is this vegan yogurt super affordable at just $0.32 per ounce, but it also hails from a company which is a certified B Corp!
The only downside we could find in regards to this option is the fact that it is soy-centric–which could pose a problem for those dealing with food allergies. Soy is actually one of 8 foods which the FDA identifies as a major allergen, including other problematic items like peanuts, wheat, and eggs.
Pros:
- Has a smooth, thick, creamy texture.
- Free from saturated fats and low in calories.
- High in protein: 6 grams per serving.
- Provides good amounts of calcium, vitamin D, and potassium.
- Has plenty of pieces of real fruit.
- One of the most affordable vegan yogurts.
- Comes from a certified B Corp.
Cons:
- Is made from soy, which is a relatively major and quite common food allergen.
Best Oat Milk Vegan Yogurt:
The Original Oatly Blended Oatgurt Non-Dairy Yogurt Alternative
Flavor: Mixed Berry
Number of Probiotic Strains: 5
Here is how The Original Oatly Blended Oatgurt Non-Dairy Yogurt Alternative scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.5 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
- Value: 4.8 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.8 / 5.0
Oat milk makes for a fantastic vegan yogurt too! We totally love this Oatgurt from the company who arguably knows oat-based dairy the best: Oatly. Their Mixed Berry flavored oat milk yogurt is a fine combination of real blueberries and raspberries, which result in an incredibly accurate berry flavor–fruity and aromatic yet not overly sweet.
Out of all of the yogurts we tasted, we have to say, this is the one that could fool us into mistaking it for real dairy. In addition to oats, this yogurt makes use of pea protein for enrichment as well as textural purposes.
We love that they only use certified gluten free oats (as gluten contamination is often a concern when it comes to oat crops) and ensure that the oats are also glyphosate residue free.
The packaging of this yogurt truly stands apart from the competition with its fun and vibrant coloring and while we’re at it, let’s talk about the coloring of the yogurt itself! In order to punch up the volume of those naturally colorful berries, they opt to include other color sources like black and purple carrot juice as opposed to synthetic food dye. And as always, Oatly prints the carbon footprint of each product right on the label so you can be an eco-informed shopper every time.
There weren’t too many things that we didn’t love about this yogurt, but it’s worth noting that this is one pretty high-carb option. Coming in at 20 grams of carbs per serving, this is definitely not the prime choice for anyone who eats keto or otherwise prefers to stay low carb.
Pros:
- Delicious combo of real blueberries and raspberries.
- Is the most like real dairy yogurt in terms of taste and texture.
- Incorporates pea protein for added nutrition and improved texture.
- Oats are certified gluten free and glyphosate residue free.
- Packaging is the most bright, fun, and colorful!
- Yogurt is made more vibrant by colorful veggie extracts--no food dye here.
- Carbon footprint info is included on the label.
Cons:
- The product is quite high in carbohydrates, with 20 grams of carbs per 5.3-ounce serving.
Best Unconventional Vegan Yogurt:
Lavva Dairy Free Pili Nut Yogurt
Flavor: Vanilla
Number of Probiotic Strains: 6
Here is how Lavva Dairy Free Pili Nut Yogurt scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.0 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.6 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.3 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.8 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0
You may be unfamiliar with the pili nut, but you should certainly get to know it! Its flavor is likened to that of cashew nuts or macadamia nuts, but its texture is buttery rich and creamy.
The folks at Lavva figured out how to use these little nuts to produce a yogurt-like product, complete with a thick yogurt-y texture that will certainly satisfy and stand up to all of your favorite toppings. Bring on the berries and toasted coconut!
The texture of the pili nuts is complemented by the addition of coconut cream, coconut water, and mashed plantain, which work to round out the texture and flavor of the yogurt. We sampled the unsweetened vanilla yogurt of this brand, and loved that we could see the speckles of real vanilla bean seeds dotted throughout the mix.
This vegan yogurt is free from added sugars and GMO’s, as well as is suitable for paleo eaters. It also proudly states that each cup contains at least 50 billion active probiotics in the form of 6 unique strains.
Though the viscosity is great, the yogurt overall has an unfortunately grainy texture--likely due to the pili nuts themselves as it is hard to get such a product into a completely homogeneous mixture.
We also can’t say we were appetized by the coloring of this one, as the strange off-white yellowish hue read more like hummus than yogurt. And, this yogurt was definitely towards the top as far as pricing, costing us $3.50 for the humble little container.
Pros:
- Has one of the thickest, richest textures.
- Contains coconut cream and plantains, for boosting flavor and texture.
- Has real vanilla bean seeds.
- No added sugars or GMO ingredients.
- Paleo friendly.
- Contains loads of live probiotics.
Cons:
- Is somewhat grainy due to the nut ingredients.
- Coloring and overall appearance are not appetizing.
- On the more expensive end of the ranks.
Best Greek-Style Vegan Yogurt:
Kite Hill Greek Style Plant Based Yogurt
Flavor: Plain Unsweetened
Number of Probiotic Strains: 5
Here is how Kite Hill Greek Style Plant Based Yogurt scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 3.9 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 4.6 / 5.0
- Value: 4.8 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.6 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
Kite Hill is a big name in the vegan dairy market, evidenced by the fact that their products scored top spots in our Best Vegan Butter and Best Vegan Cream Cheese reviews too! We sampled a couple different yogurt varieties of theirs but this Greek Style Yogurt was hands down our favorite.
The texture is unbelievably silky and is as thick and creamy as Greek yogurt should be with a brilliant white coloring that makes it tough to believe that this one isn’t traditional dairy-based. Its base of almonds plus soy protein gives this yogurt an outstanding 15 grams of protein per 5.3-ounce serving--over 3 times as much as the 4 grams your average vegan yogurt offers!
This plain yogurt is unflavored as well as unsweetened, making it a blank canvas for all kinds of applications. It’s also free from any sugars, GMOs, artificial preservatives, and is nice and low in both saturated fats and carbs. And due to all of that almond action, 1 serving of this yogurt provides 15% your DV of iron!
Our biggest complaint about this yogurt unfortunately comes down to the flavor. Something about the particular culturing of this yogurt comes across very tangy, almost leaving your mouth with that dry, tannic feeling. We can see this yogurt doing well with some sweet toppings or as part of a savory recipe but doubt that it would be very enjoyable consumed on its own.
Pros:
- Silky, thick, creamy texture as you’d expect from Greek yogurt.
- Crisply white in color.
- Provides 15 grams of protein per serving.
- Nice and versatile as it is unflavored and unsweetened.
- Sugar free, GMO free, artificial preservative free.
- Low in saturated fats and carbs.
- Provides 15% DV iron.
Cons:
- The plain flavor is not ideal for eating on its own, as it is too tangy--would be better with toppings or seasoned for a recipe.
Most Indulgent Vegan Yogurt:
CocoJune Organic Cultured Coconut
Flavor: Lemon Elderflower
Number of Probiotic Strains: 5
Here is how CocoJune Organic Cultured Coconut scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.8 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 3.9 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 4.3 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 4.5 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0
The Lemon Elderflower flavor of this yogurt from CocoJune was definitely one of the most unique we came across. Not only is it pleasantly citrusy, but the elderflower offers a wonderful and complementary perfume.
The sweet flavor of the yogurt is combined with a super thick, rich texture that almost hits you like straight coconut cream! Without a doubt, this yogurt is a treat, but thankfully it is a USDA organic and non-GMO verified treat with “billions of proven probiotics” to boot!
We also love that CocoJune goes the extra mile to make certified plastic neutral products, meaning they take steps to ensure they are minimizing their use of plastics. For the plastics they do use, an equal or greater amount of plastic is recycled to compensate. In regards to this yogurt specifically, it was the only one to come in a paper cup as opposed to plastic!
Unfortunately, there may be a reason why this is one of few companies packaging their product in paper as opposed to plastic or glass. We found the carton of our CocoJune Organic Cultured Coconut to be feeling a bit soggy and have our doubts that it would hold up very well if you were to pack it for lunch or a day trip.
And as for what makes this yogurt indulgent, the high proportion of organic coconut in this yogurt takes a toll on the macronutrient profile on this one. Each tiny 4-ounce serving has 15 grams of saturated fat per serving which is a staggering 75% your DV.
Pros:
- Comes in tasty unique flavors like this Lemon Elderflower version.
- Has a very thick velvety texture.
- USDA organic and non-GMO verified.
- Contains billions of live and active probiotic cultures.
- Comes in a paper carton so as to reduce plastic exposure and waste.
- Is a certified plastic neutral product.
Cons:
- Paper carton gets a bit soggy and does not stand up well to travel.
- Contains a ton of saturated fats--75% your DV.
- Portion size is very small, just 4 ounces.
Best Vegan Yogurt for Gut Health:
The Coconut Cult Probiotic Coconut Yogurt
Flavor: Original Plain
Number of Probiotic Strains: 16
Here is how The Coconut Cult Probiotic Coconut Yogurt scored in each of our criteria categories:
- Taste & Texture: 4.2 / 5.0
- Nutrition Content: 4.1 / 5.0
- Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
- Value: 3.7 / 5.0
- Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
- Overall Score: 4.4 / 5.0
In an aisle full of coconut yogurt options, The Coconut Cult is doing things their way! Their coconut yogurt has just 4 ingredients: coconut cream, coconut meat, coconut water, and a special probiotic blend. That’s right no flavors, sweeteners, thickeners--no nothing!
What it does have however is an astounding 16 unique probiotic strains which provide the ultimate microbiome boosting power.
Due to the fact that this yogurt is essentially pure blended coconut meat, it has a creamy, albeit a bit mealy, texture. It is very low in both sugar and carbs, coming in at just 1 net carb per serving which makes this a great keto-friendly yogurt option. We also love that it comes in a really durable--and reusable!--glass jar.
The main downside to this yogurt is that it is not exactly yogurt as you normally think of it. This is not the yogurt you should reach for when you want a bowl for breakfast or late night snack. Rather, this is essentially blended coconut which has been cultured.
The idea is not to eat it by the cupful, rather to work 2 tablespoons of the product into another dish, toss into a smoothie, use it as a topping, or simply take it as a supplement. If you’re looking for all the health benefits of yogurt but don’t enjoy eating it by the bowlful, this is a great option.
Its unique nature means it is probably not available in all grocery stores and it is also insanely expensive. The 8-ounce jar cost us $12.00, which works out to $1.50 per serving!
Pros:
- Contains just 4 whole food ingredients.
- Has sixteen different probiotic strains, the highest we found.
- Very thick texture.
- Low-sugar and low-carb.
- Is keto-friendly.
- Packed in a reusable glass jar.
Cons:
- This yogurt is not meant to be eaten as a meal, as most folks would expect--use it as an additive or supplement.
- Not the most readily available product.
- Super expensive, each small jar costs about $12.
Best Vegan Yogurt FAQs
Is There Any Rice Milk Based Vegan Yogurt?
Though rice milk is an excellent substitute for dairy milk, sadly, this plant based dairy option does not take well to the yogurt making process. It tends to result in a very watery textured product. Also, there is minimal protein content in rice, which of course is a main reason why many folks choose to eat yogurt in the first place.
Are All Dairy Free Yogurts Considered Vegan?
One must be careful when shopping for vegan options in the yogurt aisle because not every dairy free yogurt is vegan friendly. Some “plant based” yogurts may be dairy free but still contain refined sugar--which is often processed with animal bones--or non-vegan additives like honey or gelatin.
Check the back of each yogurt for a “certified vegan” symbol and read through the ingredients lists to ensure that any added sugars are organic, as this means it is not processed with bone char.
Is Vegan Yogurt As Good For You?
Due to the wide range of ingredients and production styles, vegan yogurt as a whole can’t claim to be “healthier” than traditional dairy based yogurt, it is simply different!
Most vegan yogurts tend to be lower in protein than their milk-based counterparts, however they also usually offer a comparatively lower fat and calorie content. One exception to this is coconut milk-based vegan yogurt, as full fat coconut milk is extremely high in both fats and saturated fats, giving it a macronutrient profile more similar to that of full fat dairy.
Where vegan yogurts and non-vegan yogurts do align however, is that they both provide live and active probiotic bacteria.
Best Vegan Yogurt: The Bottom Line.
With so many different vegan yogurt options to choose from, it can be tough to navigate the non-dairy aisle. We hope the inside scoop on our favorite plant based yogurt brands will give you a head start on making your selection, whether you are looking for a yogurt made from oat milk, soy milk, almond milk, or something a bit more outside the box!
